Óc Eo culture is a scientific term used to refer to an archaeological culture that formed and developed from the 1st century to the 7th century, or possibly extended to the early 8th century AD in the lower Mekong River delta region, in the southern part of present-day Vietnam.
This is the material culture of the Kingdom of Funan, an early state in Southeast Asia, which had a wide influence in the region and Asia from the early centuries AD. This culture has native origins, found in the Central and Southern regions of Vietnam.
Óc Eo culture became known after an archaeological excavation at Óc Eo Field (Óc Eo town, Thoai Son district, An Giang province)
Conducted by French archaeologist Louis Malleret in 1944.
Since then, Óc Eo – Ba The has become a famous archaeological site not only in the Southern region of Vietnam but also in Southeast Asia and Asia. Over the decades, excavations here have brought to light a large number of relics and artifacts that vividly evidence the formation and development history of Óc Eo culture, proving Óc Eo to be a large, bustling, and renowned urban center of the Funan Kingdom.
This is the trace of a great and glorious civilization that once existed from the 1st to the 8th centuries, and has been discovered in many places, with An Giang province being considered a key area concentrating the most types of relics and artifacts. Óc Eo mound in Ba The (Thoai Son district) is the first place to find important remains of this ancient civilization, and Óc Eo has become a general name for all remains discovered in other localities.
